Gallup will no longer measure presidential approval after 88 years



The Gallup Presidential Approval Rating has for decades been the among the top barometers cited by media outlets measuring public opinion of the president’s performance. 

President Trump has seen his rating by the agency slip in recent months, peaking at 47 percent last February and dipping to less than 37 percent in its last poll taken in December

“This change is part of a broader, ongoing effort to align all of Gallup’s public work with its mission,” a spokesperson for Gallup said. “We look forward to continuing to offer independent research that adheres to the highest standards of social science.” 

When asked by The Hill if Gallup had received any feedback from the White House or anyone in the current administration before making the decision, the spokesperson said, “this is a strategic shift solely based on Gallup’s research goals and priorities.”

Data geeks spent most of 2025 worrying that President Donald Trump would cook the books on America’s most important numbers. The bigger threat turned out to be that he wouldn’t count them in the first place. 



Surveys that monitor food security, police misconduct and how schools are supporting post-pandemic learning recovery have been canceled. Data collection has been suspended for emerging substance abuse trends as well as more than 15% of the sample of the nation’s most popular inflation index. Information about maternal and infant mortality in the US is no longer aggregated up to the national level, forcing doctors and researchers to scavenge across the states to gather it. And there’s no knowing whether databases on critical infrastructure for disaster planning, or maps that identify communities disproportionately affected by environmental hazards, will ever come back.

Modern Challenges (2016–2020): The American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) noted that 2020 polls, including major national polls, had the highest error rate in 40 years. Polls in both 2016 and 2020 tended to understate Republican (GOP) support.

Methodological Adjustments: Following these challenges, Gallup and other pollsters made significant changes to their polling, sampling, and interview procedures to improve accuracy.

Trust and Reliability: Despite errors in election, polling, and public opinion surveys remain widely used by leaders to measure trends, though they face declining trust from the public.

Overall, while Gallup remains a premier polling organization, the accuracy of its election predictions has faced scrutiny and required adjustments due to recent, significant polling errors in the 21st century.
