We sold that under the guise of "occupant safety". Pretty good, right?       

In the 1950's all you had to do was wipe off some blood and replace the driver. Car barely got a scratch.

Hollywood Stunt Men have been jumping off of roofs into cardboard boxes for 100 years.
Some poor guy had to be THE FIRST to test the idea out though.

As a kid I  remember strolling through the wrecking yards and seeing bloody scalps embedded in the windshields.
With 750,000 miles of driving under my belt I've never caused an accident.
Maybe those walks through the wrecking yards did me some good...?

I think one of the worst / evil / underhanded things an  Auto Engineer ever did was to make the drivers side lug nuts on Mopars left hand thread.
Any guess how many 1000s of axle studs were snapped off by the car owners while trying to change a tire on the side of a busy highway on a rainy night...?
[I snapped one off  when a friend asked for help with some lug nuts that refused to break loose on his Dodge Charger].....

How many years did Chrysler even do that crazy ****?
Knowing what I know now, I can't imagine that saved anyone from any problems or cost.
Tooling and inventory alone wouldn't be worth the trouble for an imagined gain.
It costs money just to have some separate part numbers in the system.

a buddy of mine drove a 65 barracuda in high school…we were in the shop where his dad was the mechanic…we were left to our own to rotate the tires…he snapped 3 off before the old man came of and remarked, “ya dumb sons a bitches! They’re left handed!” to which of course, lead to him taking the time to fix it while we looked on…

lesson learned, never bought a mopar…

speaking of lug nuts…in my early 20’s,  I had a ‘66 caprice 4 dr hardtop where the RF wheel came loose. I got it home, drove out the 2 badly stripped next to each other bolts…put it back together figuring 3 would be good to get me to work the next day and on the way home, pick up a fresh set…

the next morning I’m headed to work accelerating onto the highway when I noticed a vibration. The RF dipped, went high, then I observed the wheel rolling off at high speed into the ditch as the car settled to the pavement…all I could do was laugh…

I had a delta 88 in high school

What keeps car wheels tight is they distort slightly  when clamped against the hub or the brake drum. Pretty ingenious engineering.

I can picture the front end of the Caprice "going high" as it spit the wheel out. 
I had  a "uni-lug" style mag wheel  shear off most of the lugs while driving. 
Talk about some very stupid engineering.
I never completely learned to avoid aftermarket, sub standard  crap that is sold to Hot Rodders.....
