The amount of new competition was massive, and the new entrants to the market place were superior in multiple aspects - not just on fuel consumption. Apples and horse feathers.

Okay. I don't buy it - but okay. 

For the price of muscle cars to drop "significantly," either the cost of production would have to have suddenly dropped, or the previous prices must have been a deep and shameless gouge. The only other market-sensible possibility that I can think of would be that this "significant" drop affected already produced, suddenly out of demand autos - meaning a blip, not a trend. Auto makers do not produce loss leaders. They build for profit.
