Agreed. There are a lot of examples of songs that would not be released today and frankly I'm surprised that the PC police haven't stopped them from being played on oldies stations. Two that come to mind are Ruby by Kenny Rogers. In it he says "If I could move I'd get my gun and put her in the ground."Misty » 18 Mar 2019 11:31 am » wrote:You're probably right.Redrock » 17 Mar 2019 7:36 pm » wrote:Here's one of my favs from the 60's. No one could write a song like that today.
The politically correct police would not have it.
I'm not a fan of trying to rewrite history and whitewashing it to fit into today's standards.
I take things in the context of the time they were written.
That song does not offend me at all.
I think it's fun.
I went to a wedding once where the band only knew a few songs, so every other song they played was Delilah.Redrock » 18 Mar 2019 12:01 pm » wrote:Agreed. Another one is Delilah by Tom Jones. In it he says "She stood there laughing. I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more."
Chances are they don't even pay attention to oldies stations. Which is fine with me. These songs don't bother me at all.
Great Tom Jones reference. Probably the youngsters on this board don’t know that women used to throw their panties on stage when he was performing.Misty » 18 Mar 2019 12:16 pm » wrote:I went to a wedding once where the band only knew a few songs, so every other song they played was Delilah.Redrock » 18 Mar 2019 12:01 pm » wrote:Agreed. After a while we all started singing along.
My, my, my, Delilah.
Why, why, why, Delilah.
A song about a man who murdered his cheating woman.
How appropriate for a wedding.

I would throw my panties, if I were wearing any.
Ah yes. Leader Of The Pack. I love it when she says “I met him at the candy store.”Misty » 18 Mar 2019 12:36 pm » wrote:Speaking of songs about death, is any else old enough to remember the 1960's teenage tragedy songs?
