At 73 I can count on one hand the number of top state and federal positions that have been won by other affiliations. Every time a third party has attempted to win the presidency all they have done is give the election to the party less like them. Ross Perot was the last one running for president and he was somewhat conservative so he split the Republican voters and both times the Democrat won. In parliamentary countries there are major and minor parties and the smaller ones are the swing votes. With the laws of voting that will never happen here except on the local level.
