I used to show dogs. A standard poodle is a GREAT dog.  Remember they are the second most intelligent breed of dog so be careful to treat him lovingly and give him the kind of training that wont make him neurotic.  They are loving loyal and great companion dogs
 

I have done my research.
I know they can be nervy and pretty unforgiving of handler mistakes.
That's why I am doing classes with him.
my dogs are my hobby, and now I have a lot of time to spend with him.
I am very fortunate because I can bring him to work with me.
He has been introduced to so many new situations already, and he meets them head on with confidence.

My Staffie mix was like that. So brilliant she made me look good lol.
I started her training the first day home - (she was ten weeks) - I thought her learning some commands would make her feel more confident - that she understood the rules.

I am not exaggerating when I tell you first day, 5 minutes, she had Sit locked down.
Second day, Down.
Third day, Stay.
By the FOURTH DAY HOME, I could put her in a Sit/Stay and LEAVE THE ROOM.
She wouldn't move a muscle until I came back and released her.

Told my husband - don't tell anyone she's a dog genius - let them think I am a genius dog trainer.
 

We train in 5 minute increments about 4-5 times a day.
I am huge believer in NILF training.
He already sits and maintains eye contact until I release him to eat.
Sleeps through the night in the crate, and only needs to be pottied twice a day at work.
He has learned that the office is where we are calm.
I ADORE a smart dog!
Especially one that wants to please you.

I have trained mostly Rottweilers and Boxers.
They are HUGELY forgiving of mistakes.
So, I am a little nervous.

They are and both are very trainable.  I used to show Kuvasz they are a fairly smart dog but NOT easy to train. They tend to put THEIR judgement above yours especially when it comes to protecting you and that can be a problem.  I saw a LOT of rottweilers in obedience shows

They are totally cool, calm, unflappable lovebugs, but they can be very hardheaded, and if you don't earn their respect they will simply ignore you.

My sister loves her pitties.
They are not the dog for me.
I am obsessed with German dogs.
I love everything about them.
Germany made some damn fine dogs.

My Rott was very obedient and very loyal.
Also like velcro.
I couldn't even water the flowers without him at my heels.

But I am biased.
My family is Scottish.
We made the smartest dogs.

It has been my impression that boxers are a bit thick in the head - heart strong and willful, not too talented in the brains department. 

Never owned one - is that a fair assessment?

they are a delightful pain in the butt. have two siblings in the room just over 16 months old. one's my sons and the other my wife's, I love other people's dogs until I have to care for them. Dogs never shut up when you learn their body language.
