what if NAFTA was never signed?  Would we somehow just not have any engineers, steel Mills, natural resources, research laboratories, any of the things that are needed for modern luxury/convenience?  It would have all just vanished if not for foreign trade?  I don’t understand how

I’m not even talking about states being independent, just the US. The Country is so vast, we have every natural resource, limestone in Indiana, oil in Texas, pure clean groundwater in Arkansas of the highest quality… we became the Arsenal of democracy in WWII because we have every resource needed for manufacturing, period.

dude, we are equivalent land wise to the combined territory of every European power.. Spain, France, Germany, Italy, the U.K. And Portugal combined have less land mass.  And those countries INDIVIDUALLY warred with each other and dominated the rest of the world for much of recorded history.

how brainwashed do you have to be to think we are dependent on global trade?

The problem is that an economy that is good for manufacturing is bad for finance. Also, there would be less prostitution

During the Cold War, China was our enemy.  They actually sent troops over the Yalu river to attack Americans during the Korean War.  We had no trade at that time with them, their trade partners were severely limited, yet it was during that time they grew and became a nuclear power.

oil which they covert to manufacturing goods...which allows them to export a lot more than they import. But this just makes them some extra money. No evidence they rely on it.

They absolutely could return to isolationist China like they used to be and do fine. They have the resources they need. 

Totally unlike a country like say the uk..which simply doesn't have enough food domestically grown to feed itself.

They are just importing the stuff they need to produce all our underwear and crap. Even though we could easily do that here.

They don't need to export as much as they do. If we made underwear in the US, then they wouldn't have to make so much underwear...and they wouldn't have to import so much oil.

And the usa should not rely on imports either. The only resource north America seems to lack is...I guess...rare earth elements
