Nearly 25,000 mail-in ballots rejected in March 1 Texas primary, mostly due to new election law

The first vote conducted under requirements of the new state law saw a rejection rate of 12.4% of ballots mailed to elections offices, a trend AARP Texas director calls “deeply troubling.

”AUSTIN — The Texas Secretary of State issued a report Wednesday indicating that nearly 25,000 mail-in ballots were rejected during the March 1 primary, sharply higher than rejections recorded in prior elections.

The major increase in the number of rejected ballots stems almost entirely from new mail-in ballot identification rules from a controversial election law enacted earlier this year. Before the law, election officials typically saw rejection rates hovering near 1%. 

In total, 24,636 ballots were rejected across Texas. Of those, 14,281 were Democratic ballots while 10,355 were ballots for the Republican primary. About 3 million ballots were cast in the primaries.

The outcome of the Senate District 10 election was predetermined after the latest redistricting cycle, Texas Sen. Beverly Powell said hours after announcing her withdrawal from the November general election.

Powell, a Burleson Democrat and first-term state senator, is suspending her campaign for the North Texas district and withdrawing her name from the ballot. Her exit sets up an all but certain victory for state Rep. Phil King, a Republican who won his primary in March and is set to appear on the November ballot.

In an interview with the Star-Telegram, Powell said she would have stayed in the race were it not for the new boundaries that she and others argue in a federal lawsuit are racially discriminatory, dividing Tarrant County’s Black, Latino and Asian voters.

In a speech as far back as April 11, 2014, President Barack Obama came right out and said what MOST of us knew to be true even BEFORE then. That voting rights are under a GOP attack.

Fact was the GOP has been attacking people's right to vote for sometime now, prior to the 2016 election, prior to the 2020 election, and continuing more in earnest now, even as we speak.

The conservative response is that the laws are necessary to address issues of "voter fraud" which in and of itself IS a FRAUDULENT ARGUMENT, created by the right in order to pass discriminatory legislation.

Nor is their attack upon the right to vote their ONLY attack upon civil rights.  Because the GOP has also LONG been busy curtailing the rights of CERTAIN others as well.

APPARENTLY, if you don't see the world through their narrow minded conservatively MYOPIC point of view, you don't DESERVE rights.

WE (liberals) should be screaming, "STOP THE STEAL!"

The conversation would begin taking a sharp turn as soon as Amendment 4 passed.Under the language of the Amendment, people wouldn’t have their rights restored until they completed all the “terms of their sentence.”

Opponents of the measure seized on this detail, arguing that that should mean the payment of all fines, fees, and restitution attached to a sentence, not just serving jail time.

In 2019, Florida Republicans passed a bill called SB 7066, making this interpretation the law. 

What to an outsider might seem like a dry change to administrative law was in fact massive blow to the ideals of Amendment 4: because of Florida’s archaic, at times predatory, systems for levying fines against those in the criminal process, the legislation disqualified from voting about 1 million people who still had outstanding balances with the state.

Florida was now locked in an absurd conundrum, what one judge called “an administrative nightmare.” The state, despite keeping people from voting based on their fines, has no central database keeping track of them. The 67 different county clerks offices responsible for such records varied widely, with some keeping detailed electronic records, and others lacking files, paper or otherwise, at all, especially for older convictions.
