The gun will be returned - he is the legal owner. He broke no law in acquiring it.
Lying about being an EMT wasn't stupid. It was typical kid stuff - probably hoping it would get him laid, definitely looking to pad his resume.
Going into an active riot was not stupid. It was brave. There will always be a large class of men who see self-risk and the willingness to sacrifice as stupid, and a smaller but nobler class of men who see it as gallant.
You are free to size your class down any time that you choose. Dignity is just a nut check away.
