When someone comes in ,uninvited, which do you grab first?
My pistol is right next to me.
The AR 15 is next to my wife.
The shotgun is leaning against the wall by the bed.
The dog doesn't own a gun.

The Judge.  Right next to me.  The pistol is under the night stand.

Pistol.  Here's why:
  • Pistol is easy to store where I can access it
  • Pistol is easier for me to use to clear rooms
  • Pistol will do everything a rifle will do to an intruder at distances of less than 30 feet
  • I have nice things, things I don't want destroyed with buckshot going everywhere
  • Shotgun is heavy and, like a rifle, not easy to store.
  • I trust my semi-auto pistol more than I trust a semi-auto shotgun.  I have seen some very fine semi-auto shotguns jam because 12 ga ammo pretty much sucks. As for pump-action shotguns - not into them at all!  Noisy and cumbersome.
But, the real reason?  I just like a nice pistol better than a shotgun or some kind of AR/AK rifle.

I'll have a glock in my hand for sure.
For all the reasons you cited but also because I shoot the pistols every week and am very comfortable with either.

  That's right!
My wife won't touch a pistol or shotgun because of recoil though.
The AR 15 on the other hand she loves.
Minimal recoil,maximum effect.

The only gun I've named is my Glock 20.
. I named it Mjolinir after Thor's hammer.

Actually I got a pistol that shoots 4-10 shells so I could get the best of both worlds.

And I can change the barrel to almost any caliber under the sun.

I generally keep one of my two DA/SA pistols for home defense: S&W 659 9mm or my Witness Stock 10mm. I am just more comfortable with DA/SA firearms.  Also, my Glock has a threaded barrel, and that's a "no-go" in a HD scenario.

We had a discussion about that over here.
That someone could grab the gun from me quicker then I could think to shoot. And fire it off. I know How to shoot. But not that fast. I have to think about it too long. And that's all it would take.

I almost pulled the trigger on a Ruger .357 revolver about a month ago. But I can get that performance and more from the 10mm.
I'm now looking into .44 mag. Expensive but the heart wants what the heart doesn't need.
I'll always only carry my Glocks for protection but revolvers are.....you know revolvers.
Just downright cool.

My wife used to be the same way. You don't really want to shoot someone, nobody does.
I put it to her this way.
 She loves our dog.
He will be the first one on an intruder.
That intruder is going to try to kill the dog.
 What do you do?
She says "I'll kill any **** that's hurting my dog!"
She won't hesitate and neither would you.

You need to practice a lot and form muscle memory.
That weapon should feel like an extension of your body.
