.357 is generally a bit more powerful than even hotter 10mm loads.  But, really, the two rounds are very comparable.  Recoil is a bit more manageable in a 10mm auto, and my Stock holds 16 rounds and 1 in the chamber.
I'm now looking into .44 mag. Expensive but the heart wants what the heart doesn't need.
I bought a Desert Eagle 44 mag back around 2000.  I hardly ever use it.  Not because it's too big and heavy, which it is.  .44mag ammo is always outrageously expensive. I did use it to shoot bowling pins and it worked really well for that.  Here's the thing - either you are going to handlaod for it, or you'll never shoot it.  Just remember that!!!
I'll always only carry my Glocks for protection but revolvers are.....you know revolvers.  Just downright cool.
I have several revolvers.  2 Pythons which I keep more for investment/trade - don't shoot them. But, I do have a super early Dan Wesson .357 - has the exposed barrel nut and the porkchop barrel shroud. I REALLY like that gun.  I'd like to find a 2" barrel for it (reasonably priced).

That someone could grab the gun from me quicker then I could think to shoot. And fire it off. I know How to shoot. But not that fast. I have to think about it too long. And that's all it would take.
More practice will cure that.  But, you live in a rural area, has anyone around where you live ever experienced a burglary?

Where I live, they would have to drive about a half mile up a private drive just to get to my driveway, and then up my driveway.  Clearly, it would have to be someone who had been to my home before.  If some vagrant wonders up to my house late at night, he will probably be thirsty and starving to death from the trek - I'd probably meet him out in the driveway with a glass of water in one hand and my pistol in the other.

Exactly Al. That's my point. I have to think..  In a  few seconds- it could be too late. gotta be fast.
I'll get out there this summer and do more.

NO. LOL. That's why it has never been up there on my list of things to do. We leave the doors to the house open.

But!!!  some strange things have happened here in the middle of the night... we seem to be the escape route... when criminals are on the move. Robbed the drugstore.. right down this road -they come.

We were taught to try not to shoot if you can ... but if you do shoot ... shoot to kill and continue to shoot until they are dead.

never give anyone a chance to be in jail for 6 month planning revenge on you or yours ...

I live alone at my lake place all summer.
I cannot be there without a dog.
I used to have a Boxer, but he died last summer.
Now I have a Standard Poodle.
He has a big bark, and he is very alert.
Doesn't have scary dog cred, but I don't doubt he can get the job done if need be.

I need to practice more too.
My favorite handgun is my Ruger .38/.357 revolver.
I love a revolver because they are idiot proof.

Dirty Harry had a .45 ;)
I have one just like it.
But, it's pretty heavy and hard to handle (for me).

Very athletic and can probably hold their own.

My pistol is right next to me.
The AR 15 is next to my wife.
The shotgun is leaning against the wall by the bed.
The dog doesn't own a gun.
Move to a better neighbor. Christ.
Are these "asshole killers" locked up when you leave?

I hate thieves and really hate the ones I "give access" to my weapons.
So I don't.

I can get to mine fast but a burglar would never spend enough time trying to find them.
Please seat yourself.
