Enslaved black people was the main reason America’s wealth grew so quickly.

It is important to get the record right.  Many aspect of slavery in the Americas have been covered up and purposefully ignored.  Others have been misconstrued on purpose to serve the political interests of the writer.  A short list of what has been largely ignored is as follows.

1.  America was not founded ON slavery.  It was founded WITH slavery.  Slavery existed in the colonies before they were really even colonies.  In fact slavery existed on the west coast of America for 270 years prior to the founding of our nation.  Think about that number.  It was present before America for longer than America has been America.

It was during this period the conditions were harshest.  But Africans were not the first.  A vital resource in short supply was timber.  England, Spain, France, Dutch etc. had done a very poor job of conserving their forests due to the overriding need to create ships.  Warships and merchant ships.  When the new world was discovered and reports came back of virgin forests as far as the eye could see with huge trees of all kinds the colonial empires set out for the new world.  The conditions were harsh and to obtain the labor vitally needed the crowns turned to the judiciaries.  If you were an able bodied citizen and found guilty of a crime you were quite likely to end up in the new world as an indentured servant.  The standard sentences in England were 7.5 years for minor offenses and 15 for more serious crimes.  In many cases charges were trumped up to meet quotas set by the crown.

These weren't African slaves, they were white Europeans.  Many were conscripted foreigners rounded up by various means.  Prior to this time the Spaniards and virtually every world power in existence throughout the planet practiced slavery.  All of China was enslaved, as was most of Manchuria.  Australia too was colonized by prisoners.

I was privileged to read a historical document of the accounting sent to the crown of progress in the Americas. These reports stressed progress was slow due to the conditions and the mortality rate of those indentured. Fewer than 5% survived a 7.5 year sentence. Average longevity was less than 3 years servitude. Many escaped and braved the North Carolina swamps they were draining, preferring to be consumed by gators and snakes.

2. The solution arrived at first by the Dutch (East India Trading Company) but later by all the major colonial powers was Africa. Africa was in complete disarray and many were starving due to erosion caused by the removal of many indigenous forests. Deserts expanded and the nations of Africa were in a continuous state of war.

To fund these wars the standard practice was to conquer neighboring tribes, take the survivors captive and sell them into slavery. White Europeans weren't running through Africa chaining up Africans, Africans were enslaving Africans. In fact our terms for Stocks and Bonds arose from the slave trade in reference to the stocks and bonds used during transport to the new world. European investors would purchase Stocks and Bonds identified as theirs. Upon arrival if the slave bound by your Stock or Bond was alive and had value you profited. There are still examples in various museums and the archives.

Hey LibDave, I agree. It isn't the color of anyone's skin. Slave is slave, conscripted, shipped, it's all the same. We have majority of white folk embedded in poverty, so to say it's just a problem with color is not correct.
Discuss, or don't. I was talking to a white homeless guy telling me that he fought in Vietnam and was responsible for securing the safety of hundreds of Vietnamese during the communist takeover Hanoi. He seemed like a nice fellow, he looked to be in his seventies and wore a dress.

3. By the time of the Revolution slavery was heavily entrenched in the colonies. Slavery was introduced as a British institution, not an American institution. After the revolution the question of slavery was very much on the minds of the Founding Fathers (FF). The creation of a government was a more pressing issue and slavery was so ingrained by the British they weren't able to address it and come to a consensus. It would have to wait. Nevertheless, ALL of the prominent FF were able to get wording placed into the Constitution which even the Southern Slave states knew would have to be addressed at some point in time. The FF at the Constitutional Convention were actually the first governing body on record to address the morality of slavery. And by the way, Jefferson did not father Sally Hemming's children and he was in fact one of the most ardent proponents for the abolition of slavery at the outset.

What was agreed upon at the convention when the Constitution was written was that the issue of slavery could not be addressed by the new government until the year 1800. Constitution was in 1789 so this meant for 11 years no bill could be introduced regarding slavery. It was thought and hoped by that time a transition to a nation free of slavery would be possible.

At 12:01 AM on January 1st of the year 1800 the Congress stayed up in a late session to vote on the 1st bill in the US (or the World) to address the issue of slavery. While they weren't successful in completely abolishing slavery, they were able to pass a bill abolishing the importation of any more slaves from outside the US. In other words, no new slaves could be brought from the African continent. Slaves already present were still permitted, as were their offspring. But it was a huge step and a 1st in human history.

4. During the period from 1800 to 1861 the conditions for slavery were far less harsh than those which were present during the previous 200 years. During this time the slave communities began to develop their own internal societies and support systems. Still, they were heavily subjugated by a legal system in which they had no right to property or even the produce of their labor. Historical records indicate this made the slaves quite sedentary and without industry. A form of silent revolt in many cases. It had nothing to do with genetics though many of the slave owners (many themselves were black) attributed their lethargy to genetic factors. However, the reality is they had little to no incentive to work. Something any modern capitalist of today is well aware. Many achieved their freedom in this manner as their concerted effort did have value and many slave holders traded their freedom for produce of equal value and brought about the institutions of Share Cropping.

It took a period of less than my lifetime for the US to cast off the institution of slavery in place at our founding. This is something we should be quite proud to have accomplished. We were the first. Slavery still exists today in many parts of the world all the way back before biblical times.  I witnessed young white European children being auctioned off in the Middle East in the early 70's.  Only recently abolished, yet it still occurs in secret I'm told. This was no small accomplishment and the US suffered more dead of all races during the Civil War than we have in ALL OTHER CONFLICTS by far. Casualties in WWII were 235,000. Civil war casualties were close to 1 million.

I'm not poopoo'ing the detestable practice of slavery.  But it is important to get the record straight.  As Americans we have an amazing tendency towards self deprecation.  I have many conversations with European and others who constantly tell me, "The US is such an amazing and wonderful place.  Virtually everything we now take for granted that is good in the world we owe to the US.   Radio, film, cameras, television, phones, cell phones, every modern appliance, and even liberty, freedom and self government.  No other nation has come close to the blood sacrifices in the cause of fighting for world freedom.  The US feeds 70% of the worlds people.  No nation is more generous.  Yet when you listen to most Americans it is as if they think America is the worst country on Earth.  Many Americans give zero credit and no leeway to their own country."  This is perhaps a uniquely American condition.  The ability and encouragement to redress the government for improvements.  Perhaps this too should be a source of pride.

I've lived throughout the world over a long lifetime.  Trust me,  historically we are far from responsible for much of the evil in the world.  In fact without the US it would be a far worse planet to live.  And now for some strange reason we (or someone) is attempting to destroy our Republic and convert us to everything detestable.

Case in point.  Blame America First guy.

Question for you... How many Native Indians lived in America at the time Columbus arrived?  Answer is about 4,000,000 estimated.

100 years later (with minor European migration) in 1600 how many remained?  Answer, 400,000.

Why the 90% drop in population over a 100 year span in spite of far too few Europeans to "kill the native people"?  Answer, disease.

Native American Indians lived a fairly nomadic lifestyle.  Tribal.  They didn't congregate in large cities where hygiene and waste and close contact allows diseases to promulgate.  Europeans had immunity to dozens of diseases the natives had never been exposed.  It took these Europeans a millennium to acquire these immunities.  The Native Indians lost 90% of their population as a result.  The Indians came to believe the spirits were favoring the White (who never seemed to get sick) and that for some reason they had aggravated their deities.  By the time European migration began in earnest around 1600 there were only 400,000 natives left.  It was very sparsely populated.  It was inevitable the Americas would be settled by the colonial nations at that point.

There have been many examples in which the Native Americans were dealt with unfairly.  Many continue to this day to seek redress in the courts.  In large part they have been made whole to the extent possible.  They have substantial land holding and sovereign rights.  They could return to the lifestyle of their ancestors today should they so desire in large part.  Most have chosen to take advantage of modern social norms and are quite successful.

First part is total BS.  As for the last question, I'm guessing wars on a biblical scale probably around 2025.  And it won't be pretty.

America deserves every nanosecond of blame it gets.  The founding principles of The United States of America...

Puritainism...everywhere else is a godless hell
Utopianism...everywhere else is ****.
Individualism...I got mine you can go **** yourself.
Manifest Destiny...the expansion of the US throughout the American continents was both justified, inevitable, and approved by a white European god.

And all of this led to the two great founding action principles of the United States of America...
Slavery of black people.
Genocide of native American people.

Slight difference between endentured servitude and chattel slavery. Servants had a period to work, after which they were free. African slaves service period was not only indefinite, their status carried on to their offspring. It was this aspect that made the practice odious.

Slaves were expensive. How often does a rancher beat their 2 million dollar GPS controlled harvester? The notion slaves were frequently tortured is patently absurd. Many were treated as extended members of their owners family, a vast majority stayed with their former masters upon Emancipation.
