First, Elon Musk did not make this purchase without profit being one of his main motives. To make a $44 billion purchase and lose money is not rational and he is a smart man. The money speaks first and then the politics second.

Now THERE is a rational statement.
Musk is a futurist and some sort of utopian idealist. He wants to terraform and colonize Mars, a huge job that would take generations to accomplish.
