It took me 6 or 7 days of thinking, about an hour a day before i went to bed, and i finally figured it out with pure logic. My daughter did it in 3 days with math and gosh knows how many hours she spent on it, bc she was thinking about it non-stop.

So it should take 6-7 hours of non-stop thinking if you're a genius, like us! That's why it is a great brain exercise.

Remember, that's one of the goals, determine which one is different, and whether it is heavier or lighter.

I told you this ain't gonna be easy... :-)
Ah, I see I missed that... it's early and I haven't had enough coffee yet... that makes it more complicated, give me some time, I will figure it out... I hope... lol...

No worries! Take your time! 6x6 is usually most people's first answer. :-) Think logically...

That's awesome! I have these, from this site: https://www.tavernpuzzle.com/

I will say the downside is that your hands smell funny afterwards from the cast iron metal, so you have wash your hands after use...

I thought about it some more and since it makes my head hurt I came up with another logical solution... it can't be done without knowing if that one marble is heavier or lighter...you put that in just to mess with peoples heads... but of course you would never do such a thing... right... lol...

I might be wrong... in that case I would love to hear the solution... but I'm not going to break my head over it, that doesn't go well if I smoke some herbs... and I really need some now...

lol, there's no messing! After three weighings, you should determine which marble is different, and whether it heavier or lighter than the others. No tricks :-)

I already gave you the most logical solution I thought of... lol... I'm not here to make my head hurt, the idea is to mess with other peoples heads... but I can't wait for you to prove me wrong... too bad I will have to wait a week for that...

geez, i guess you're not as smart as I thought you were....

But cmon, you have to give it more thought! What did you spend, like 15 minutes? And you're ready to give up on a puzzle i told you will take 7 hours minimum?

It's ok if you don't want to try. It's really hard. But I am disappointed in a lot of you.

lol... but I don't know who will win... my logic says it's me but I wouldn't mind being proven wrong....

I hate to have to wait a week to find out...but it can't be helped I guess...

Start thinking! :-)

You have 12 marbles that look exactly the same. 11 of them weigh exactly the same, and the 12th is slightly lighter or heavier, but so slightly that you cannot tell without a scale.

You have a legal scale and you get 3 chances to weigh the marbles against each other.

After the 3rd weighing, you must be able to determine which marble is different, and whether it is lighter or heavier than the others. This process must be the same every time, and work every time in every possible scenario. No getting lucky!

Just fyi, this is what a legal scale means: You have to weigh one side against the other... :-) Good luck, you brainiacs!!! This is a great mental exercise!

Ok, here's my solution:
  • Weigh 6 on one side and 6 on the other
  • Eliminate the 6 that are the heavier side
  • Now, from the lighter 6, place 3 on one side of the scale and 3 on the other side
  • Eliminate the 3 that are the heavier.
  • Take only two of the marbles from the 3 remaining and place one on each side of the scale
  • If the scale balances, then the one you didn't weight is the light one; if one side or the other is out of balance, then the lighter side gives you your answer.
