Step 2, you put 2 yellows on the left, one on the right, and remove and move the others, which doesn't matter at this point since they are equal. You're still weighing 4x4. 

The scale goes up on the left and down on the right.

You have 2 chances left. If you put yellow marbles on both sides, then you don't determine weight, bc you don't know if it's heavier or lighter. It can be either. That's why you have to put them on the same side, bc that will determine weight.

Outcomes:
1. even
2. side a lighter
3. side a heavier. 

1. even: The sequestered marble is the imposter. You have 11 controls. Weigh it 1x1 against any of the 11 controls. Solved for culprit and lighter vs. heavier.

2. Side a lighter: Weigh the 2 on side a against each other. If even, the 1 on side b is the culprit and heavier. Solved for culprit and lighter vs. heavier. If odd, the lighter is the culprit, because side a was lighter. Solved for culprit and lighter vs. heavier.

3. Side a heavier. Weigh the 2 on side a against each other. If even, the 1 on side b is the culprit and lighter. Solved for culprit and lighter vs. heavier. If odd, the heavier is the culprit, because side a was heavier. Solved for culprit and lighter vs. heavier.

It means you have only 3 suspects - the two on the left and the one on the right. Once you find the odd man, you know from which side it was on whether the odd man is lighter or heavier. And you find the odd man by pitting the two from side a against each other. If side a was lighter, then the lighter marble is the culprit - solved. If heavier then the heavier is the culprit - solved. If they are even, then the odd man out is on side b, and is either heavier or lighter based on whether side b was heavier or lighter. 
 
The matter is solved using only two marbles on each side in the second weighing (three if weighing one was odd).

You're a genius!!!! I was stuck on determining the weight of the last 3 on the 2nd step. 

But you can do it the way you said. You're totally right!!!

But next I have to think if that same procedure will work in every scenario, with the steps involved. The solution I gave you is done the same way regardless of results. It's always the same procedure.

Have to figure out if yours works in every scenario as well, but I'm way too tired... :-)

But congratulations!!! Out of the dozens of people that I have given this puzzle, you and my daughter (who has a mathematics degree) are the only ones to figure it out, besides me of course :-)

I knew you would see it, once you looked directly at it without comparing it to the solution you had already worked out which determines the heavier vs. lighter issue at  different stage. The cut is different, but the rules are satisfied.

OK, this is really funny and weird! I had to wait for verification from my best friends in NY....

I posted The Bangles video of Walk Like an Egyptian before. It was filmed in NY, I'm from NY. I noticed someone towards the end, 3:07 to be exact! 

Me, Paul, and Jordan where at a bar called The Main Event, which is right by Hofstra University, where the NY Jets practice. This big friggin guy comes in the bar and demands to play pool next. I was next. So we got into a push match, and Jordan comes and RIPS his shirt off!!!! Jordan gets sent out front, the big guy is sent out back....

Seconds later, he comes rushing through from the back and goes out front where Jordan is waiting. Jordan's 5'10", this guys like 6'5". But Jordan is a champion wrestler. 

Before we can even react, Jordan has him in a full nelson, and pounded his head into the concrete 3 times. Asked him if he wants some more, and he said NO! And he went away in his car. Jordan still has the shirt! And if you notice in the video at 3:07, he still doesn't have a shirt!!!! LOL!!!! We're cracking up about this.... That was him!!!! And the video is at Hofstra University, where the Jets train! That was a long time ago! And it made our day again!!! :-)

Pause at 3:07, and laugh at him for a moment! :-)

Beware the temptation to believe now isn't eternity as saving humanity/alternate reality is this species manifesting destiny through rule of law pretending intellectual ideas are divine providence because language exaggerates time while mutually evolving forward here..

back to puzzle. it is two dimension logic that leaves out a bit of information placed in original post and that was the part about the odd marble being lighter or heavier than the other 11.

See the op setup a 0-9 riddle, the solution is a 1-10 step methodology not including the percentages right of a decimal point. of 1.0 whole filled with intellectual loopholes.

I get your method of 4 x 4 in the first step when equal you eliminated the odd so step two is place the remaining 4 2x2 and left or right will hold the odd marble heavier or lighter. don't mix hindsight with foresight you only get lost honoring possibilities life is more than genetically being eternally separated now.

Devil is in the details lived by intellect alone..

see my brain navigates space as well as it does contextual ideas because I don't surrender to possibilities while the corrupted dictate my social behavior cradle to grave through rule of law consensus damning anyone not taking a side in alternate realities played out ancestrally here..

I fully admit to losing interest quickly.
Not necessarily to being unable, just too lazy to stay with it.

I rendered it down to what it really was:
A sorting exercise with 2 weighings using 8 pieces... then hit zero on my "Give-A-****" Meter.
