Based on the current price trajectory of basic food stuffs, I cacklate I am making better than 40% per annum on my investment. Plus I get the fun of smoking and canning and dehydrating - a wonderful new hobby. I even roast my own coffee beans, from green (which are hlf the price of roasted beans, and keep for years). I think my roasting abilities suck - but my family loves my beans.

That is sad. But a decent wood stove and stack can be got and self-installed for a few hundred, and a decent chainsaw can be got for peanuts. I paid more in 80's dollars than chainsaws cost today in 20's dollars - they're ****' GIVIN' 'em away. What else is required? I agree that wood heat is labor intensive, but it is CASUAL labor - that is, you can do it on your own schedule, when time permits. Burning wood builds character.

It's the triple walled stainless steel chimney pipe that could cost you $80 per foot that adds up rather quick. A splitting maul with a hard plastic guard on the handle has proven to be my favorite tool..but you still need a couple of wedges to keep your other tools from getting stuck in a bind at times.
