Initially, I just assumed this was some kind of crude zip-gun. But, after you mentioned it fired 3 shots, I had to go and see if I could find an image of this gun. I knew that there is no way it could be a revolver - clockwork and timing is just too complex for a novice gun maker. So, here is a supposed photo of the firearm used:
To me, it looks like 3 zip-guns (pipe-guns) held together with electrical tape. The photo clearly shows 2 of the barrels, there's probably a 3rd on the other side. This is actually quite fascinating to me. I'm wondering if this device used a combination of cannon fuse and an electronic igniter to fire each of the 3 separate barrels. Are you familiar with vaping Mods? (see photo)
I find these vaping mods to be curious devices which could possibly be used to electronically ignite black powder, when used in conjunction with cannon fuse and/or flash paper. This might be easier than trying to manufacture primers.

Someone said that the weapon used had to have BULLETS.
This does not seem to me to be essential.
Blunderbusses do not use bullets.
Muskets do not need bullets.
They used a powder charge, which was tamped down with a ramrod and lead ball, which was also tamped down.
During the US Civil War, the Union had repeating rifles only for the last part. The Confederates mostly used muskets.

The term used at the time was Minié ball.

I am pretty sure than a person could find lead and make his own ammo. Lead is used as balancing weights for auto wheels and tires and is found in lead acid batteries.

In the same prefecture Abe died.
He died in Nara Pref. in Kansai . . . not too far from where I live.
Well, to be completely honest, I live in the hills of Kobe, Hyogo prefecture and he died in Nara, Kansai prefecture !
But the road to Nara goes several times through Kansai and Hyogo prefectures !

Some people use tire weights to make their own bullets - tire weights are preferred since they haven't lived their life in acid. Gun barrels don't like corrosive material. Casting bullets (also know in the hobby as "boolits" https://castboolits.gunloads.com/showth ... oolit-quot) is done by bench-rest shooters looking to make consistently near-perfect cartridges.
Probably the cheapest thing to make bullets out of are zinc pennies. The boolit-casters actually discourage this. While you can cast a zinc bullet, boolit casters hate getting zinc contamination in their smelting pots and casting materials. Some of these folks actually go and mine lead from the backstops/berms to use to cast more projectiles. Since it is difficult to distinguish lead from zinc, except by weight and close inspection, zinc projectiles can ruin the ability to mine lead out of berms. However, zinc is know to be a good projectile for cleaning lead fouling out of barrels. Ok, now I've gone way down the rabbit hole on this!
