I'm for the ban because there is no reason to give military style weapons to civilians.

If AR-15s looked like Ruger Ranch Minis they wouldn't sell 5 % of the volume. They DO sell to pathetic wannabes compensating for one or many shortcomings, physical as well as psychological.

The muzzle velocity of a Ruger Mini 14 is 3240 ft/s (990 m/s).  About the same as the Ar 15 semi autos you fear.  Not quite 5x that of any other rifle but right there.  

That muzzle velocity is achieved without the help of the external visual parts you fear.
