Lots of folks try to invest in hard goods that hold value - real estate, for example. But on the other side of that coin is the speculation/bubble economy, making a seller's market. I can tell you that I have spent many thousands on staples and on the infrastructure to be off-grid for months at a time. We have a whole-house generac being installed this month, and I have an extra thousand gallon propane tank, just for the generac. Vacuum-sealed smoked meats deep frozen and all the beans and rice an army could eat, jarred meats, fruits and vegetables, sprouting seeds galore - everyone has their own idea of how to prepare. 50 cent a can stuff...in some cases
The only stuff of this vintage I've tossed were tuna packed in water that was a little bit discolored. From now on..packed in oil is the only way to go.

I had some jarred succotash that was two years old at yesterday's dinner. Most of the stuff in my well-stocked pantry is on the new side - though I do have some bargain-sale nut butters and tahinis that have some years on them.

I have a brand new generator- wood furnance in the basement..- and a kerosene heater. during the y2k i had 5- 50 gallon barrels to store gasoline! And me the stoopid arss that I am -gave them away! never give good stuff away!

These little guys let you put the heat where you need it.
$20 at Walmart.
Once I started using those little heaters, I took the forced air electric furnace out and converted that closet to food storage.
I would hate to lug firewood upstairs...but it's good exercise I'll bet..!
A woodstove is a 100% upgrade though.
Just think about all the heat that escape a big hole in the wall like a fireplace.

it doesnt do the bedrooms.. Almost the entire house.. But! It is a pain in the arss.. i have to throw the main breaker.. click click.. push the breakers all over to the other side....the ones that run things..
Go down stairs.. shut off two.. push them all over.. out to the garage. throw the two breakers on out there.. and start the generator.
gasoline fuels it! there in lies the real problem!!
my family sold propane back in the day.. No i dont have a large tank. only a propane cook stove.

It sounds like you are properly set up by an electrician - but a tad under-powered, so you have to pick and choose.
Gasoline isn't a horrible fuel, since it's in regular supply. People with gas and no electric will certainly be willing to trade. The problem is storage, since gas is quite volatile. Keep your car full lol.
