Well I think what you are wading into is identity politics. Americans are separated as a social construct in many places in this country by who we identify as. We are asked on surveys and government documents. We are pandered to politically and marketing wise. So why do we still divide people by groups? Why is so much of our perspective shaped by who we identify as? I still think there is a re enforcement of stereotypes in America.

It wasn't about race, but keeping society working smoothly without interruptions that come from some creating division within a working society by another social order.
