In the latest explanation of how ultra sensitive government documents were still in his safe a year and a half after leaving office, the former President's spokesman informed us yesterday it was homework:
"As we can all relate to, everyone ends up having to bring home their work from time to time… He had a standing order that documents removed from the Oval Office taken to the residence were deemed to be declassified.."

In other words, homework is work you take home in order to keep it at your house when you finish, "as we can all relate to".
And in other words, by eliminating a document's security classification you transfer ownership of the document to you.

The FBI had a warrant to retrieve all documents that Trump had absconded with, so it would have been absolutely necessary to open any and all safes on the property. It is not illegal to own a safe. What was illegal was Trump taking documents that he had no legal authority to take.
