Seems a tad ham-handed to my Murkin sensibilities, but it's understandable. Certainly logical. I cannot imagine mounting an impassioned, evidence-based argument AGAINST the practice.
I feel the same about signalling a joke with a lulz. I mean, what's next - canned laughter? Not the hill I wanna die on, or anything - but I find the idea not terribly to my liking. It's reminiscent of an over-wagging dog. I like a dog that is self-possessed.
