When the Hucksters for whom you vote either promptly vaporize any surplus or multiply the existing deficit, you reward them with your fealty. And for that they deliver **** macro economic results.

Think of this as a narrowly targeted tax cut. If economic theory holds, this should divert income from those with a low marginal propensity to consume, to those with a higher one.

Actually, it's a tax INCREASE for everyone who has debt forgiven.  You claim to be very intelligent and informed, don't you know debt that is forgiven is taxable income for the person given the relief?  They are in for a surprise the next time the file a tax return and have to declare that income that did not have taxes withheld because the loan documents (and yes, I have read them as my daughter took out a student loan) do not contain a provision that excludes them from income if the debt is forgiven in this manner.  The forgiveness must be for work performed in certain areas by selected professionals.

Under what legal authority?

Nobody forced those people to sign the loan documents. It isn't a crime to charge more than something is probably worth.  If it were, every Starbucks franchise owner would be in jail.

Technically so was the delta between your mortgage and what the bank collected when you turned in your keys in 2008...

But it was almost universally forgiven.

I agree 100%...you should read more of my post related to this topic.

However...as an FYI...not all debt forgiveness results in taxable income.  Related to student loans, Congress set conditions (and put them in the loan documents) that allow for ways to have the debt forgiven and excluded from taxable income.  However, a blanket forgiveness by POTUS is not one of them...so even it this isn't struck down in court it will be taxable income.  Prepare for the whining...

I know someone who held 1.2 million in mortgage obligations against 2 part time jobs paying a total of 20k per year.

I bet the write off was more than 35%..
