Who here is going to remember the days when there were no grocery stores, but you had to catch and prepare your own food? Deer? Boar (it's always Boar season)? Turkey? Big Deer (Elk)? I've got to find some new hunting buddies, so I'm not that prepared this season. What about y'all?

I have only seen Antelope herds in Alaska. And, that was from a small helicopter. We saw a couple of lone Elk off in the distance there too. But, down here, it's all white tail deer in the South. Deer everywhere. Seems to me like the populations have gotten a little too large.roadkill » 02 Nov 2022, 9:54 pm » wrote: ↑ It's big country. I assume the antelope are migrating for the season. I've never seen a herd that big. They must gather from different areas and then pass through a migration route.
This happened about 50 miles from where I live...Skans » 03 Nov 2022, 4:08 pm » wrote: ↑ I have only seen Antelope herds in Alaska. And, that was from a small helicopter. Someone was pretty hungry! I couldn't tell who was winning. I think the Reindeer had him licked, but the little guy kept coming back for more. So, here's a question. If the Reindeer actually killed the Wolverine, and assuming the Reindeer is hungry following the fight, would it try to eat the Wolverine?roadkill » 08 Nov 2022, 11:57 am » wrote: ↑ Amazing..."Wolverine VS Reindeer in a Blizzard"

I know! But, it dawned on me that if the Reindeer was hungry enough he might just take a few bites out of the recent kill. Species do tend to evolve and diets can change over time. Are there any instances of herbivores eating another animal?DeplorablePatriot » 08 Nov 2022, 2:09 pm » wrote: ↑ I was hoping the reindeer would slam the wolverine into the tree trunk. As far as eating the wolverine, he'd be violating his vegetarian diet.
I don't doubt there are exceptions to the rule. Like liberals using good judgement.Skans » 08 Nov 2022, 2:18 pm » wrote: ↑ I know! PS - I was just too curious to not look this up. Here's and excerpt from what I found:
There are quite a number of herbivores that eat meat. It’s not like it is a natural order for herbivores to eat meat, but there are a few animals that will do it anyways.A cow will eat meat but this is occasionally due to the mad cow disease. Some legendary cow in India was said to have devoured about 48 cows!
This might come as a surprise for anyone unaware of their terrible temper and aggressiveness but the ferocious hippos from time to time eat meat too. They have, on special occasions, fed on impala, and even eaten the remains of their kind.
A few deer individuals have been also observed feeding on meat from time to time. Small birds, mice, and frogs are the most common meals among meat-eating deer.A part of the lorikeets’ population, according to an avid bird watcher in Australia, is beginning to have a knack for eating meat. This hasn’t been proven yet by scientists but seeing is most definitely believing.
