The Nazis had the largest submarine fleet ever assembled. It was highly successful at sinking supply ships coming from the US and Canada. But then the Brits cracked the Nazi code and they knew where the subs were and sank them.

The code gave to location coordinates and sonar told them how deep.
Books have been written about this. Get your library card and read all about it.
I do not claim to be an expert. I do know that the Germans had LOTS of subs and they were defeated because of improved technology of the Brits and the Americans.

what was the ratio between the two, breaking the code or people getting more experience reading sonar results? 70/30 experience with new equipment or breaking the code.

I go with those using the equipment got better reading results and sounds of the pings echoing back.

Here's what it boils down to, fruit. A man who lets his wife convince his son he would be more loved without his nuts is a man who has no nuts.
