and the usa did not 'supply arms to our allies' in the cold war. Nato existed simply to prevent europe and japan from having their own military. it was fear of fascism, not defense against the ussr, that inspired nato.

there were nazis, like otto hahn, who did want to pursue creating nuclear weapons. Hitler was quoted multiple times saying that he refused to develop a weapon that could threaten the existence of all of humanity.
