I'm reading that the guy was a grad student from a nearby school.
He probably had the hots for one of the girls, and she told him to get lost so he went after her.
The other three were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. The killer probably didn't realize there were two more housemates downstairs or he would have probably killed them too.

Dude is mental for sure. You have to be to stab four people to death while they are sleeping.
I have known a few psychotic/schizophrenic people that are true Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde types.
Medicated, they are as normal as anyone else, but off their meds, all bets are off.
These people walk among us, which is why I carry.

Mood disorders are weird. We all ride the rollercoaster of life, but some people seem to have a really hard time with the peaks and valleys, or can't differentiate between them at all.
Some of the drugs they have these days don't help as much as they hurt, IMO anyway. Sometimes it's best to just let people develop, instead of trying to force it one way or the other.
