Jennings, Raven, Lorcin, Bryco - all the same company....essentially.PlumHollow » 23 Feb 2023, 3:06 pm » wrote: ↑ Yeah, I meant the Raven. Didn't blow up or anything. I'm usually quite careful when I hear, "Try this one..." But I have had a couple reminder scrapes from a slide or two. I never held a J22.
Ok. They sure look alike.Skans » 23 Feb 2023, 3:13 pm » wrote: ↑ Jennings, Raven, Lorcin, Bryco - all the same company....essentially.
It is actually kind of interesting to delve into the history of those companies. I won't bore you with that. All of the guns are similar, but some are better than others. All are made from ZAMAK - a zinc alloy. Same thing they used to cast hot wheels out of. The problems with these ZAMAK guns actually were not the ZAMAK parts, but the springs, extractors and magazines.
I looked up ZAMAK for a cost comparison. Cheap gun, cheap materials, right?Skans » 23 Feb 2023, 4:39 pm » wrote: ↑ It is actually kind of interesting to delve into the history of those companies. Yes, funny thing is people always rip on the cheap, cast zinc frames and slide, but those parts never fail. Hi-Point uses Zamak in its slide, but those guns apparently work as rugged as Glocks. Hi-Point came out with a cheap 10mm. I'm skeptical - Zamak and 10mm???? But, Hi-Point uses better parts and components. Not like **** Bryco/Jennings/Lorcin.DeezerShoove » 23 Feb 2023, 7:08 pm » wrote: ↑ I looked up ZAMAK for a cost comparison. Cheap gun, cheap materials, right?
The comparison was ZAMAK to stainless steel. Cheaper, of course.
But apparently pretty tough stuff. Makes sense that the other stuff is the weak link.
Part of a good design is addressing the interface between parts.Skans » 24 Feb 2023, 9:13 am » wrote: ↑ Yes, funny thing is people always rip on the cheap, cast zinc frames and slide, but those parts never fail. This is true. And, a (supposed) reason why one 1911 might cost $500 and another $2,500. It's the little **** that matters.DeezerShoove » 24 Feb 2023, 9:27 am » wrote: ↑ Part of a good design is addressing the interface between parts.
Like the ends of a hardened spring steel against the softer zinc.
A cheap gun may have a burr and a better gun may have a polished spring, for example.
One design/manufacture aspect that lends a lot to wear and efforts.
In watching The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly as a kid, I always thought it was an interesting bit when Tuco went into the gun shop. He took several revolvers apart and kept swapping parts until he had one good gun.Skans » 24 Feb 2023, 9:29 am » wrote: ↑ This is true. I forgot about that - that was a good scene.DeezerShoove » 24 Feb 2023, 9:36 am » wrote: ↑ In watching The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly as a kid, I always thought it was an interesting bit when Tuco went into the gun shop. He shot some targets then robbed the owner.

Oh, there are worse guns than those ZAMAK guns. Some just didn't work.
It's ironic . . . Morton Grove was on the leading edge of banning guns back in the day.Skans » 24 Feb 2023, 2:05 pm » wrote: ↑ Oh, there are worse guns than those ZAMAK turds. Like this stainless beauty - the Rogack P-18. Perhaps the worst gun ever manufactured and actually sold:
Known as the illegitimate bastard child of the Steyr GB, which is an excellent firearm.
I didn't realize that about Morton Grove. Makers of bad laws and bad guns. LOL!DeezerShoove » 24 Feb 2023, 9:48 pm » wrote: ↑ It's ironic . . . Morton Grove was on the leading edge of banning guns back in the day.
This piece of "equipment" probably didn't help.

Saw an article about the bd9. Looked good on paper so I will check it out.Skans » 14 Feb 2023, 10:18 am » wrote: ↑ You still have to cock the derringer. Why not just get a small kimber 357?
If someone is coming for you in your own home, I get it, I'd have something a with more capacity and more powerful to greet them with. But, remember when you are carrying, there is no "castle doctrine". You're not going to be taking shots any farther than 15 feet.I
I personally carry one of 3 guns: Diamondback db9 - small, relatively inexpensive 9mm which I can pocket-carry. STI LS40 which I can pocket carry. And, a Boberg XR9 which I can pocket carry. While I really like the Boberg, they have gotten kind of collectible, so I don't carry it much. Same with the STI LS40. As for the db9 - it's a knock-around gun. Holds up pretty well too, but I don't shoot it that much. Just enough to make sure it works with my choice of ammo, which is staggered: Hollow point in the pipe, followed by 2 solids and the rest hollow points. Need to do it that way to make it reliable.
The db9 is an adequate gun that is easy to carry. It is not fun to shoot 50 rounds out of. It can be finicky as to the ammo it likes. And, it's not for hitting paper at 50 yards. The positives are:PlumHollow » 02 Mar 2023, 11:12 am » wrote: ↑ Saw an article about the bd9. Looked good on paper so I will check it out.
Here's a modern revolver that was featured at the 2023 Shot Show. I would love to have one of these, but I can't find that they are selling any yet.PlumHollow » 02 Mar 2023, 11:12 am » wrote: ↑ Saw an article about the bd9. Looked good on paper so I will check it out.
