Astonishingly, Digital Trends, the International Business Times, The Guardian newspaper in the UK, and LA Weekly also all took the story at face value and reported it faithfully. No one questioned the science...
There’s an Okayama University with a sizeable science department, but no Mitsuyuki Ikeda is found on staff, or even affiliated with the university. Almost all reference to Ikeda online is in connection to the poop meat story. But he’s not an entirely fictional character. Oh no, there is a Mitsuyuki Ikeda in Okayama. Born April 4, 1959, he’s the Director of the Okayama UNESCO Association. He has an extensive web page detailing his background and his work towards “Building an Environmental Education System for Peaceful Global Community”.
However, as an environmental and civil engineer, Ikeda’s credentials don’t seem to jive with those of a scientist synthesizing meat from fecal matter. You’d have thought a degree in biology, chemistry, or even food science might have come in handy. He also features in an online report, dated 2006, produced by the Japan Council on the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD-J) in which he is heralded as spearheading environmental education projects in Okayama. There is no mention of his work with poop.
