I've known that piece of luggage by that term for my entire career, and I've known a few guys who have carried it and THEY referred to it using that term as well.  Clearly, illiterate mail truck drivers don't speak too often about those subjects.  And again... it's O-5, not O-6, you stupid oaf.  YOU grow up... and, while you'e at it, SOBER up, you sot.

And do I think that effective nuclear deterrence is a waste of taxpayer money?  Not in the least, any more than I think that Navy task forces that are at sea, at choke points around the globe, instead of sitting in port until the **** hits the fan are a waste.  Vigilance and readiness ain't cheap.  They ARE necessary, however.

BTW: When we had classes in the Army we talked about tactical nuclear devices. We left thinking about blowing up the world to the 0-8 +

One thing I'd like to add for entertainment sake...how many times a day do you think the codes change ?

I was stationed in MDW (Military District of Washington) and use to superficially talk to Vietnam veteran officers every day.  I wish I have been able to gone deeper but could have been called in to see the boss; if I tried and the officer didn't like it.

I saw Caspar Weinberger at the Pentagon...if I said anything BUT HELLO SIR to him...I could have ended up peeling taters. 

I saw Lyn Nofziger at the Pentagon to...I think if I spoke to him I would have got in trouble for wasting my breath.

Two, actually... one a classmate/company-mate/drinking buddy from Annapolis, another an Air Force Officer I served with in Lebanon who went to the WHMO right after that tour.  

And to the best of my recollection, the White House Military Office is separate and distinct from the Military District of Washington and the director of that office does not report to MDW.  I'm pretty sure you're wrong about that, mail man, but it's been a while so I might not have it exactly right.

Re: slang...you're dead wrong.  I have heard Commanders, Captains and Admirals routinely use a myriad of slang terms.... "tin can", "gator frieghter", "bird farm", "boomer" for various ship types, "black shoes" for surface officers, "airdates" for pilots, "bubbleheads" for submariners, "snipes" for engineers, "twidgets" for electronics techs, "deck apes" for Boatswains Mates. I can remember one time when Admiral John Bulkeley came about Farragut for a main board INSURV inspection soon after Surface Warfare Officers had gotten our own insignia like pilot's wings and submariner's dolphins.  He called the pin, which is waves coming out from the bow of a destroyer, a SWISH pin.  I asked him what he meant, and he said, "SWISH... Surface Warfare Insignia, **** Head!"  And he was the salty badass **** who took MacArthur off Corregidor in his PT boat....  "The football" was commonly used to describe the President's Emergency Satchel
