In the late 80s I was stationed in the DC area.  Whenever there was a joint session of congress we had standby crews ready with armed acft.  On Jan 6th we had the Presiding VP, the Incoming VP, all of congress to include leadership.  Not to mention Pelosi who is 2nd in line for the Presidency.

So yes, I was really shocked more force was not used at the beginning.

I honestly believe that nobody imagined that America citizens would actually attempt a coup d'etat.

it is indeed sad that a significant number of American citizens so hated our Constitution that they could not bear the thought of allowing it to be followed for the peaceful transfer of power like all other American citizens have done since 1789 and actually attempted a coup to install their choice of dictator.

Come on man there are 61 court cases or so that prove different. There was no widespread fraud that affected the outcome of the election the proposal that there was is preposterous.
That has been demonstrated over and over again in court.
It is still being demonstrated in the Dominion lawsuit against Fox which is going on right now.
No widespread fraud.

Trump attempted to overthrow the established constitutional order so he could remain in office.

no democrat has acknowledged cheating.  And we didn't need to cheat.  We just needed to change our procedures to maximize the use of mail in ballots by our base....which We did.  The GOP chose to eschew early voting by mail and, instead, urged their base to vote on election day.  The numbers don't lie... the increase in mail in ballots were HUGE and they were overwhelmingly for Biden... because that's how the democratic party targeted their GOTV efforts.

How do explain a Coup that was so poorly attended by government forces.......why did Pelosi refuse Trump's offer of more security?

The riots of the previous summer were not intended to overturn the election or overthrow the government.  I believe that the law enforcement community could not, in their wildest imaginations, contemplate America citizens storming the capitol, smashing though barriers, doors, and windows, overwhelming the standing guard force, attempting to lynch the vice president and disrupt the peaceful transfer of power.  I can remember being transfixed as I watched the violent mob climbing the walls of the capitol, beating LEO's with poles, smashing windows and doors, erecting a gallows... chanting to hang the Vice President... I was sick to my stomach and really saddened by how my country's very future hung by a thread.  I think that everyone of those folks who broke through those barriers should have been shot on sight.

They burned and looted federal property.
