I only opine on the U.S.'s social security system. I have not examined the retirement plans of other nations, so I do not opine on those. 401K is just another name for privately managed stocks and bonds. Has nothing to do with government-managed retirement.
As for people living well into their old age - I have no problem with this, so long as they have taken measures during their lifetimes to fund their unproductive years. I am all about individual responsibility. Those who plan, save and wisely invest should be able to live well off of the fruits of their labor. Those who dick around, are only employed on and off for part of their productive lives and spend every penny they make unwisely - they should live as long as they can based on the merits of what they have produced.
