A Machakos (Kenya) Court has sentenced activist Boniface Mwangi to two months in jail for making comments against Tourism Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua in contempt of court. However, the court gave the activist an alternative of paying Ksh300,000 fine. (10 USD) In a statement, Mwangi confirmed his sentencing noting that he could no longer comment about the case.

In retaliation, Mutua, who was then serving as Machakos Governor, through his lawyer Harrisson Kinyanjui sued Mwangi for what he called publishing of defamatory information. Subsequently, the Machakos High Court barred Mwangi from publishing information against the governor pending determination of the case. However, the activist was adamant that his allegations were based on concrete evidence and maintained his stance.
