As a matter of fact, I advise ANYONE who is looking for a firearm to go to a shop with a range and shoot a variety of weapons and talk it over with the instructors and sales people.

Because the best weapon for home defense is the one you are comfortable and accurate with.

Although for home defense precise aiming is not requirement.  Tight spaces, short distance, all you need is point and squeeze if you are sure there are no “good guys” behind the target.

It's largely a vanity piece....it isn't great for self defense because

you gotta "break" them to load..

you gotta be steady enough to slip the shells into the "breach"

Too tight a choke and your margin for error shrinks....

but they're expensive, and hardly something you'd buy to use to sweep your hallway of vermin....

FYI - so far,Nostradamus' omh  gave me the closest thing to a correct answer (surprisingly succinct, I might add).  He missed a key factor in making the thing work, especially in a self-defense situation, but all in all, not bad.
 

Oops, my grandpa's was a single shot with that lever on the back. don't know why I was thinging is was a double barrel except seeing in movies the lever work of the back where hte on in your pick had one.
So now I was even inaccurat on that, should make your day and intellectual win. symbolism just doesn't mean much to me.
