When farms became mechanized, the Blacks who worked on them were drafted to fight in WWI and saw that the rest of the world was not like Dixie. If they managed to prosper,often they were burned out,as they were in Tulsa and Wilmington NC.

I was just wondering what all the immigrants were doing when the rail roads, cities, roads, towns, etc were bing built.

 The Indians also got  a bad deal,probably a worse deal, seeing as they are a tiny part of the total population.

You simpleminded jerks!. What we have had in this country from the start is a CASTE SYSTEM,and the Black and Brown people are the bottom caste and are treated differently. The Irish, Italians and the East Europeans once they learned English were indistinguishable from the rest of the population.

In NW MO  where I was raised,the area was settled almost entirely by Germans.  They came to avoid being drafted after the Napoleonic period. They mostly opposed slavery because of their religion,and they were so numerous that they outnumbered the plantation aristocracy;. When WWI came, the Germans were the enemy and the Schneiders Tailors, the Schuhmachers became Shoemakers and Müllers became Millers.  By then the English and the Germans had intermarried. But the Blacks were Black and all the children of interracial marriages were also considered Blacks and therefire lower caste..The average Black American is genetically about one quarter European.
