I don't think YOU let them raise YOUR kids and I certainly didn't let them raise mine.

They most certainly do... and if the parents push back, they get labeled as trouble makers or domestic terrorists.

Examples are posted on this very forum daily.

I've had and know kids that have been in the public education system personally in the recent past and currently. Schools today are more focused on identity politics than they are actual reading writing and arithmetic. Hell, my wife has been an educator in the public system for going on 25 years now. 

The public education system today isn't anything like it was when you and I were in it, believe me. I see it firsthand.

So why do you think they have become such a phenomenon in the last couple of decades?

Saying it's the guns isn't an honest answer, because firearms have been a part of this Country's culture since it's founding.

Please note that the PlayStation 2 and the XBox were both released in 2000 and 2001 respectively and were both highly regarded for their ultra realistic first person shooter games.

Personally , I see a connection there.

I never heard of any when I was in school...in fact, no "mass" shootings at all.

Oh no... I don't think it's the guns.  I realize that guns don't kill people... sick, deranged people kill people.  

I do think, however, that an explosion in availability of high capacity magazine semi automatic weapons has made it possible for more sick and deranged people to efficiently multiply the body count.

American kids have always had a fascination with guns.... everybody I knew played cowboys and indians or cops and robbers.... everybody had cap guns.  

But I'll be honest.  My dad was a big time lawyer and his friends were all lawyers and doctors and businessmen.  And that's the kind of neighborhood I grew up in and I really don't know a single kid whose dad had even so much as a hunting rifle, let alone a sidearm.  One big reason nobody ever brought a gun to school was because nobody had any guns to speak of.

I guess my best take is that it is sort of like radioactivity.... if you have one chunk of plutonium of a certain density it gives off a relatively constant amount of radiation.  If you bring another chunk too close, you start to approach critical mass and the rate of radioactivity starts to rapidly escalate.  I think that maybe, playing cops and robbers by itself is not all that "radioactive"... and then playing video games by itself might not be all that "radioactive" ... and add more violence on television.. and then add more guns... and maybe all of those things, added together has created a near critical mass of violence and the glorification and acceptance of it that it has just exploded?

@Xavier_Onassis   is right, though... I am old enough to remember that  University of Texas Tower mass shooting in 1966 that killed 15 people.  But that was it.  It seemed like mass shootings never happened.... until Columbine....and now, they're commonplace.... literally commonplace.  In the first decade of the 21st century, there were 73 school shootings.  In the second decade there were 235.  In the first 3+ years of the third decade there have already been 111.

Well.. we got records of school shootings all the way back to 1840. Not to say you can or can't remember, but they have been happening for a long time.

I agree that it's culmination of factors. The ultra violent videos games alone aren't necessarily creating the monsters that decide to walk into a school and kill a bunch of kids, but... if you couple the games with the music, the technology, the lack of discipline and disregard for others in general, then life itself begins to look pretty insignificant.

Throw in a cocktail of psychotropic drugs on top of the rest and little Timmy can get pretty unstable.

Smartphones are a contributing factor as well. Only in the last few decades have 10 years had the world at their fingertips as they have in the last couple of decades. These kids today are seeing things at 10-12 years old that I'd never even contemplated until I was an adult. 

Smartphones should be illegal for children under the age of 18. Dumb phones are fine, but no kid should ever have unfettered access to anything their heart desires through a damn smartphone.

What word in the 2nd do they need to look up?  Seems to me they understand the definition of each word, understand the context and the accepted style of writing for that time.

In the south where my kids grew up my boys (who range from 32 to 38) had firearms safety and hunting classes in school.  Kids in high school would go hunting before school have their rifles in the gun racks of their trucks. It was part of  life. 

Additionally, they were around guns at an early age and learned safety as kids.
