You can see with each generation it's getting worse...you were lucky, we always had a one way ticket...it didn't matter if it was a different neighborhood or across town regardless of the weather...

like my brother tells me, "we weren't rich nor poor, but at least we weren't abused or had alcoholics for parents..."

I had to laugh at the "be respectful to adults" comment...we lived next to an elderly retired couple...all the kids in the neighborhood called him Bill...one day the old man was out in the front yard talking to Bill and as I was passing by, I said "Hi Bill!" and went on my way...later that day I was called aside and was told, "you don't ever call him Bill...his name is Mr Hedlund!"...I never forgot...

We were allowed to use an adult's first name under the condition that 1) they were okay with us doing so, and 2) we always included a Mr or Ms in front of their first names.

If you ever messed around and called your own mom or dad by their first names, it was whole different thing though.

It's a Southern thing.

I can honestly say that I do not remember ANY school shootings when I was growing up.

Intent never entered their minds back then...

it was definitely unheard of until Columbine...

I don't think YOU let them raise YOUR kids and I certainly didn't let them raise mine.

problem is it's a different world today...there are countless stories of where teachers are becoming social influencers in addition to teachers of math, science, etc...

Saying it's the guns isn't an honest answer, because firearms have been a part of this Country's culture since it's founding.

Please note that the PlayStation 2 and the XBox were both released in 2000 and 2001 respectively and were both highly regarded for their ultra realistic first person shooter games.

Personally , I see a connection there.

Great point...when my kids started playing martial arts video games, the wife and I both noted how their behavior changed to being more aggressive...there were a few times where the game had to be put away because of it....

Oh no... I don't think it's the guns.  I realize that guns don't kill people... sick, deranged people kill people.  

I do think, however, that an explosion in availability of high capacity magazine semi automatic weapons has made it possible for more sick and deranged people to efficiently multiply the body count.

American kids have always had a fascination with guns.... everybody I knew played cowboys and indians or cops and robbers.... everybody had cap guns.  

But I'll be honest.  My dad was a big time lawyer and his friends were all lawyers and doctors and businessmen.  And that's the kind of neighborhood I grew up in and I really don't know a single kid whose dad had even so much as a hunting rifle, let alone a sidearm.  One big reason nobody ever brought a gun to school was because nobody had any guns to speak of.

I guess my best take is that it is sort of like radioactivity.... if you have one chunk of plutonium of a certain density it gives off a relatively constant amount of radiation.  If you bring another chunk too close, you start to approach critical mass and the rate of radioactivity starts to rapidly escalate.  I think that maybe, playing cops and robbers by itself is not all that "radioactive"... and then playing video games by itself might not be all that "radioactive" ... and add more violence on television.. and then add more guns... and maybe all of those things, added together has created a near critical mass of violence and the glorification and acceptance of it that it has just exploded?

Food for thought.

another aspect is how violent tv and film have become...when we were kids, there were a lot of violent westerns on, but no blood or gore...

The Grand Theft Auto series is worse than most because it mimics real life scenarios.

The main premise of the game is to carjack automobiles and run from the cops... and your player can assault rob and kill anybody they come across in the meantime with any assortment of modern weaponry at their disposal. And if the cops or some other thug kills you in the game, then you just respawn and start again.

And we wonder why carjackings, robbery, and assaults are skyrocketing among the under 30 crowd... when they grew up on video games like GTA.

Three of the GTA series games are at the top of the all time best selling video games in the U.S. as well.

My oldest son is a high school/middle school teacher and has been one for more than 20 years.  He claims that is being exaggerated to the extreme.  YMMV

You're full of **** when you spew ideological alt-right **** like "Schools today are more focused on identity politics than they are actual reading writing and arithmetic."  It's just conjob BS.  Now...if you don't like the fact that faculty in public school systems are not spewing gay/trans hate all day long, that's too **** bad.  If you don't like that public school systems are on track to provide ALL THE **** AMERICAN HISTORY, not just the **** whitewashed trash that we received, that's too **** bad.  Most of us who grew up in the 50's and 60's (well OK those of us with half a **** brain) are pissed off and feel ripped off by the **** history we were handed on a plate in elementary and high school.  We are still not teaching the real truth about the racism and sick anti-communism politics of the Vietnam War, for christ's sake.  Keeping the world safe from communism, my ***.
