My oldest son is a high school/middle school teacher and has been one for more than 20 years.  He claims that is being exaggerated to the extreme.  YMMV

If you ever messed around and called your own mom or dad by their first names, it was whole different thing though.

It's a Southern thing.

I think with us it had to do with our parents close friends, then is was by first name, where Mr Hedlund was of the older generation and the old man thought it garnered that respect...

I went to public schools in the South during the 70's and early 80's and we were taught extensively about slavery, the Civil War and it's after math, reconstruction, Jim Crow, the KKK, Emmett Till, the Freedom Riders, MLK and the Civil Rights movement, etc etc... all in American History classes.

Hell, my High School was even named after a famous black man... In Alabama no less.

Perhaps you leftists Yankees up in **** were the REAL racists then too huh, because I know you are today.

Technically, the North did invade the South, after the Southern States seceded from the Union.

Very little of the conflict was fought in the Union States. The Confederate States weren't interested in dissolving the Union, they just wanted out of it, and Lincoln said he wasn't having it.
