That's it. I remember the double set of blades now. It's been almost 50 years and my memory isn't what it used to be.

When the Tilt rotor concept first came out they had issues. Most new acft do. The Blackhawk was named the Lawn Dart and Crash Hawk. The Huey problems will never be known because we lost 5000 of them in Vietnam. Some were combat related and others weren’t.Monderegal » 04 Mar 2023, 1:56 pm » wrote: ↑ Much less fly one? I heard from a pilot my mom was dating when I was a kid that most pilots think they are death traps. I've heard even worse things about ospreys. Whoever did that contract work shouldn't be anywhere near another government contract.
I’ve flown on it a few times. It has two pilots, a flight engineer and a crew chief. Seems all the crew does is check for oil leaks. If it stops leaking oil you have a problem.Rock » 04 Mar 2023, 3:07 pm » wrote: ↑That's it. I remember the double set of blades now. It's been almost 50 years and my memory isn't what it used to be.
I used to know a guy that flew mail in a Beech-18 that said the same thing.Huey » 04 Mar 2023, 3:25 pm » wrote: ↑ I’ve flown on it a few times. It has two pilots, a flight engineer and a crew chief. Seems all the crew does is check for oil leaks. If it stops leaking oil you have a problem.
I never crewed a Chinook but flew on them a few times. I have seen them do blade replacements and what they have to go Thru to make sure it is right is amazing.RedheadedStranger » 04 Mar 2023, 3:54 pm » wrote: ↑ I used to know a guy that flew mail in a Beech-18 that said the same thing.
He said, if it stops leaking, that means you're out of oil.
Same goes for the old AMF Harley's

This is a demonstration of what it looks like flying a helicopter 5 feet off the deck at 100 knots, or about 108 mph. Scout pilots do it in the bush!
in a woodland environment one minute you are a few feet above the trees and the next you dip down to a few feet above a field and then back up again for the trees.
When I was a young crew member that was the best flying to do. As I got close to 30 it made you think about what you were doing, particularly with a family.DeezerShoove » 04 Mar 2023, 4:35 pm » wrote: ↑ I looked it up first and thought that was the one.
There were a few "Nuclear..." acronyms but that seems a bit heavy for a copter.
Thanks.

Years ago I went up with a corporate pilot that was based at our FBO who's company has just acquired a King Air 200 to do a "check ride".Huey » 04 Mar 2023, 4:38 pm » wrote: ↑ When I was a young crew member that was the best flying to do. Had a UH-60 crash about 5 miles from here...road test after repairs...all 3 on board perished...MR-7 » 04 Mar 2023, 2:52 pm » wrote: ↑ Well Rock.....I'm pretty sure you were not on a Black Hawk in 74.
Named after the Native American war chief and leader of the Sauk tribe in the Midwest, Black Hawk, the first production UH-60A was accepted by the Army in 1978, and entered service in 1979 when it was delivered to aviation components of the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions.

He shot a missed approach at a pretty good clip on the short runway that passed right in front of our office, and dipped the right wing towards my boss and a couple of co-workers that were standing outside before pulling back up and to the left and banked away. At the time I thought it was cool as ****, but thinking about it now, realized just how dangerous that **** was. I was looking out the window on the right side when he dipped and I swear the wingtip was cutting the grass.
Approach control had a fit about it and he got in some trouble, but he didn't give a damn. He had flown for Air America in SE Asia and loved the adrenaline. He never even put the gear down on the approach and never had any intention of landing when he shot it.
