Never ridden in one, but when I was a kid I used to cut cedar blocks off in the swamps, stack em up about 5 slings to a cord, and on fridays the chopper boys would come in and fly em out.

My slings would be ready to connect to, they'd sit in one spot up in the sky and lay that cable right in my **** hand, hoist my sling up and drop it on a landing whilst I sprinted to another sling, then it was second verse same as the first until all my slings were on the landing to be loaded for market. Those vietnam boys could do **** with a chopper that was downright jaw dropping.

But of COURSE it's a death trap - engine stops, cage drops. It won't glide like a prop job.

You're only telling half the story.

Those were not ordinary shovels. They were assault shovels.

Paints a whole different picture when you add the context.

I could have rode in 100 of them in Korea but I was drunk...the air field was right next to my compound but I spent all my free time drinking.

I had a friend (Mad Max / RIP) who was a civil employee chopper liaison with the GOV in Vietnam.

He would go back and forth every 3 months...he told me he had a great.  He went on one unauthorized mission....they gave him a M-16 but no ammo.  I guess if he needed it he could have found it.

people use to commute between airports on helicopters. only way to really enjoy wilderness camping is by having a helicopter fly you in. with lots of yummy flood. when the food is gone. hike back out.

I spent 2 and a half years at Suwon... Most nights there were spent in Soju oblivion.. The Bars that catered to us made this swill called Jungle Juice... It was fruit punch with Soju, Peach Oscar and some other ****.. They'd serve it in a big plastic tub, and everyone would connect straws in 3 ft lengths and siphon out of it...

Me too.  Took a helicopter tour of the Hawaiian Islands on a vacation in Kuai with my wife about 30 years ago, and I highly recommend it for anyone travelling to Hawaii.  Buzzed a huge flock of sheep, flew over the volcano and the old leper colony there and circled around the beautiful Hanalei Bay of Puff the Magic Dragon fame.  I remember the touring company was called Papillon.

He's the best of queerbaits, isn't he? He PM'd me once and asked me to join him in a Jetsons party. He wanted me to stick an antenna in his *** and call him Elroy.

It is a MI 24 Hind D.  It was the Soviet attack helicopter that could also carry about 8 troops.  It was also in the original Red Dawn.  It was fast and deadly.

I could see his face... I waved... hi!
He was just playing.. but it was fun. buzzing me. lol
I wanted a date- but alas he was gone. Image  in a flash.
I'll tell you about rick-ee-dee.  In the early 90s we had an arms treaty with Russia that allowed either side to inspect a base with like 24 hrs notification.  They could inspect any structure with a 6 foot wide door or larger.  They would even call our helicopters back so they could be looked at for nuclear arms.  We landed and I see a Soviet Mi 8 HIP transport helicopter.  We get to talking to the Russian guys and they offer us a ride.  So we walk up on the aircraft and major pieces and parts are rusted, corroded and in very bad shape.  A friend told me it was smoking when on approach.  I turned to my pilots and said aren't we taking off in 15 minutes on our mission?

No way I was getting on that thing.

So if I say that buzzing cattle in a Piper J-3  with a friend decades ago was fun, idiots claim that this was wrong, but when you actually pay big bucks to buzz herds of sheep, that is highly recommended?
At most, it gives the herd a bit of extra exercise.

Luckily, there were no AR-15 equipped gun nuts from this forum present in Hawaii to shoot down your fun copter adventure.

The Vietnam War was a huge mistake that ruined lives and consumed billions of dollars . It was clear by the time Johnson inherited the war that it would be unwinnable, unless the US was willing to maintain a huge army in the South forever.
