You're asking me to pass judgement on why someone did something, without having any inkling of why they may have done what they did.
You have already explained your reason for denigrating his "perceived" dead son... so that isn't an issue.
What I need to know is, why did he feel the need to bring his son up in the first place?
Context matters, does it not?

The fat nurse is claiming that I am pretending to be a veteran. I am a veteran and I am not pretending anything. I entered the US Naval Academy in the summer of 1968, graduated June 7th, 1972 and retired as a Commander in 1993.
