In the movie The Happening, the beginning is interesting if you haven't seen it or had any spoilers like those **** trailers shoved at you. I hate trailers.

There's a sense of eeriness and shock coupled with confusion.
Soon it turns into typical plotted characters earning their acting paychecks...

But at first it captured what I sometimes think is the atmosphere today.
We're trying to figure out what invisible enemy is killing us. Why now? What next?

Dam, I totally agree.  That movie hardcore drew me in at first....then SNOOZER.
In terms of your ending paragraph..the phrase Ive heard describe this is Cognitive Chaos and/or Cognitive Dissonance.
Look at Germany.  
They allowed WASH DC to destroy 20% of their energy infrastructure (terrorist act)...without a peep from hardly anyone.
Our press, silent.  Germany press, silent.  EU press, silent.  WT actual F??!!

For me it seems like a legacy type thing.
The Soviets supplanted all things Russian as far as we were concerned.
Even the dissolution of the USSR isn't enough to separate the Evil Empire from the people.

I personally never really hated the Russians but ended up fearful of the Soviet government.
So, when the Soviet Union went bye bye, the Russians were less fearsome as a nation.
Afghanistan, right next door, became their "paper tiger" reveal in my eyes.

The rest of the "hate" from your average American is based on past history and repeated mantras.
They are dying way faster than we are as a nation.
The uneasy "alliance" with China is two parties using each other.
China doesn't need Russia as much as Russia needs China. They both know it.

Funny part is the insulation we enjoy with the distance between us and them.
China can have the largest army in the world but can't easily bring it to us.
They CAN bring it to Russia.

Another movie reference:
"Burn After Reading" - J K Simmons (CIA) sums it up when he is told information is being offered to the Russians.
He looks up from his desk and says incredulously, "The Russians?! The Russians?!"
As if he's conveying the attitude "what the **** are those weak bastards going to do about it?"

Going down the road with nothing after you have lost all property is not going to be very comfortable.

We, as a nation, are conditioned to have an enemy (or enemies).
I don't think the Russians are the fearsome brutes we hear about all the time.

The reason I bring up Afghanistan is the failed enterprise was right next door.
Ukraine is right next door.
China is right next door.
Mother Russia has ALWAYS had problems.
Some Russian leader acknowledged long ago the need for buffer-states to protect Mother Russia.
Doesn't mean those buffer-states are particularly happy being relegated to being a sandbag.
