That's hard to debate. I always try and ask "what's changed?".  Sure, we all have different answers to that question. 

For me, I'd say that humans haven't changed at all.  Technology has changed and it is changing us. We have instant access to a vast amount of information.  Information that used to take hours in a library to find, and even then what we found was generally inadequate and horribly out-of-date. Communication is easy and instantaneous. Now, everyone has easy access to mind-altering and body altering chemicals.  Poor and middle class people who don't want to work have access to money beyond anything imaginable just 40 years ago.  So, there is a lot more mobility of unproductive people to live and meander around productive people. Schools and Colleges are no longer a place of learning, but places primarily focused on intense indoctrination of young minds.  There will be a tipping point, but when?  How?  Who?

That is what some rivers do.
Flowing north is what many rivers do. It is not like water is flowing uphill. North is UP on a map, and South is down. But the continent is not like a map.
Water flows from higher elevation to lower elevation with no regard for cardinal directions.

In North America, more rivers flow South (Mississippi) East (Potomac) or West (Columbia) than North. But this is because that is how the continent is shaped.

The Nile flows North, and so do the Ob and the Rhine.
