We are watching a battle in which Ukraine is fighting Russia with material and strategic support of NATO allies.
Russia is not winning.

No sane American will benefit if Russia takes over Ukraine. This will weaken the EU and the US, but the real struggle is between China and the NATO/EU alliance.

Russia is a corrupt and increasingly backward nation and Putin's leadership does not even benefit the Russian people.

I would modify your pop's advice a little.  It would go something like this:

If you choose to play another man's game, silently study him first.  Stalk him like a man who hasn't eaten in 3 days and your prey will be the last chance ever to eat a decent meal.  Don't be seen.  Don't be heard. Don't even be sensed.  Learn your prey, and your prey's game. Find your prey's weaknesses.  Devise a plan to exploit those weaknesses, all the while playing the other man's game.  Because, when playing chess, striving for a stalemate is a "win" if you can distract your prey long enough to kill him.   That is, if murder is the secret game you were playing all along.
