Would you say that the residents of Fulton, Cobb, Douglas, Dekalb, and Gwinnett counties are mostly transplants from distinctly different areas. Moving from Alabama to this area is not much of a change, I presume. 

Las Vegas, on the other hand, is a city almost entirely comprised of transplants from SoCal, Phoenix, and the Midwest. Each of those counties is different.  And, Fulton county can be broken down into 3 distinct regions, all very different from one another.

Northern Georgia (North of Macon) has had quite an influx of new residents from other states over the past 3 years.  I do not know the statistics on this. The thing about the new(ish) Braves stadium is that it attracts a lot of people, particular businessmen, who just want to take in a baseball game.  It removed the team from a nearly all black area of the city, where white people simply didn't want to go, and transported them into an up and coming area.  Now, there are all types of eateries and upscale bars around the stadium which wouldn't have been possible in the old location. I believe it has largely been quite a success for the region.  However, I admit that only time will tell.

The reason I used the Cobb County complex as an example is because the cost is strikingly similar to your proposed project. Sure, the dynamics of the two areas are going to be quite different.  Each must be evaluated independently.  And, there are always, ALWAYS, ulterior motives and self-dealing involved between those who rabidly champion a new stadium also being those who profit the most from it.

I have no data but I suspect that baseball has a greater fanbase in Atlanta/Northern GA than in Las Vegas. They have a AAA team in Las Vegas and it struggles with attendance. Not sure how this will improve when you bring in a major league team.

For those who say but.. but.. the Raiders. The Raiders have a very strong brand and it does bring folks in. Last season.. the paid attendance originated from outside of LV about 38% of the time. As for the Golden Knights of the NHL, it is indoors which is a big item. Outdoors in Las Vegas in months other than Dec, Jan., or Feb is miserable. Also, the Golden Knights in their short history have had great success whereas the Oakland A's have not. Finally, it is much tougher to rise in the ranks in MLB than the NHL. In the NHL, all you need to get right is the left wing or right wing and the goaltender. Pure effort wins in the NHL.. while baseball is more skill based and no matter how bad you want it.. not everyone can throw strikes.

I think the Atlanta Braves have been associated with Atlanta since the 1960's. So, there's quite a bit of tradition and support for the team in the Atlanta Metro area. It's not like bringing in a team from elsewhere or building one from scratch.  Unfortunately,  Atlanta's downtown is not a safe area, and where the stadium is, it's basically all black.  The team was dying because of it and it knew it needed to move. 

Much to the chagrin of Fulton County, Cobb County had the land and was willing to lay out the money to get the Braves to move 20 miles north.  It worked out great for Cobb County and now there is even less reason to venture into downtown Atlanta.

I am sure this is a very different dynamic than where you are.  Personally, I do not follow baseball.  It's the kind of sport I actually enjoy watching live as opposed to on TV.  When you watch it live, it is much more dynamic because you aren't simply watching the pitcher, batter and catcher - that's all they show on TV.

You lay it out pretty well as to why this project works in GA. The thinking with Las Vegas is that someone will take in an A's while they are there. The baseball not being what drove them to visit Las Vegas. The A's would be the fourth or fifth option for a traveler and so just sprinkles on top of the proverbial cake. The locals will support it a bit at first due to it being novelty. However, when they win 60 out of 162 games, trade away all of their prospecfs, and stay mediocre year after year.. it will start dying a slow death. 

There is no true ghetto part of Las Vegas. There are a few neighborhoods in North Las Vegas that are unseemly but nothing like South Central LA or Fairhill (philadelphia). The proposed stadium will be on the southern end of the strip next to mandalay bay.. a mostly commercial part of town.
