A Florida jury on Thursday cleared a former school security officer who was charged over his failure to confront a gunman who massacred 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018, in an emotional trial that left bitter feelings on both sides.Scot Peterson, who was a Broward County sheriff’s deputy and worked as a resource officer at the school in Parkland, was charged in 2019 with seven counts of neglect of a child, three counts of culpable negligence and one count of perjury.

 He was found not guilty on all counts. As the first acquittals were announced, an emotional Peterson put his head down on the defense table and openly wept.The charges carried a maximum potential sentence of 96½ years in state prison, the Broward County State Attorney’s Office said.Seventeen students, teachers and staff members were killed Feb. 14, 2018, and 17 more were injured. Peterson, 60, was the only other person at the school with a gun when the shooter opened fire. He was forced to retire after the shooting.

This may have been the only prosecution in the United States of any police officer for failure to stop a crime in progress.

The officer was 60 years old, only had a service revolver, and was facing a kid armed with an AR-15 who was inside of a school firing at children.

He without question was a coward.

But do we demand a man a man be brave or else go to prison for life?

Yes, if you are in Law Enforcement, Secret Service, or the military.

The only reason we have police is because they are supposed to stand BETWEEN us and the people that would do us harm.

If he wasn't willing to take a bullet in order to protect a child, then he shouldn't have become a police officer.

He was fat, old, and completely out gunned, plus it was a terrible tactical situation.  He’s outside, and when he opens the door there’s an AR 15 behind it, somewhere.

But he was the only good guy with a gun there.   It was his duty to go inside that school with gun blazing.

But since he was prosecuted for cowardice, how many of these cops should be prosecuted?

 A majority of the officers were federal and state actors, including 149 US Border Patrol officers and 91 Texas Department of Public Safety officers. Twenty-five officers were from the Uvalde Police Department, and 16 were from the Uvalde County Sheriff's Office. 
 "They failed to prioritize saving the lives of innocent victims over their own safety," according to an interim report released Sunday by the Texas House investigative committee on the shooting.

The 600 pound gorilla in the room about this issue, is an 18 year old kid can buy the same rifle they’d issue him if he joined the army, minus the select fire switch.

Abortions used to be constitutionally protected, too.

But they never set up abortion clinics in high schools, when they were protected.

When an 18 year old who’s never fired a gun before, can hold off 376 armed policeman for an hour with his brand new AR-15 it’s time to restrict AR-15s.

Or else someday the Supreme Court will reverse course about gun rights.

Everything those officers believed they’d do, and were trained to do, and paid to do, was on the line.
