I know 60-year-olds who many a 20 year-old wouldn't want to either fight...physically or in a gunfight.
Another entity at fault here was the group that vetted him for the job. That still does not excuse his cowardice. An expert in tactics could have gone in with a revolver, used proper cover and concealment, then brought down an inexperienced KID with an AR15. Maybe not immediately, but it could be done. He never tried.

No he should not shoot the kids, but he should shoot, even at the ceiling.
The theory is the perp will stop killing kids, and either defend himself or kill himself, or surrender.

It may evolve into a Uvalde situation where hundreds upon hundreds of cops, wait for another to go first.

Jeezuz, more demented liberal thought. SROs (School Resource Officers) sure as hell ARE trained to shoot and kill an active shooter, kid or no kid. Not the **** ceiling. While the cop shoots the ceiling, the shooter is still killing kids. So, basically, this whole **** meme that "a good guy with a gun" is all that is required to take out a "bad guy with a gun" only works if the "good guy" is actually a "good guy" and not a **** cowardly **** piece of **** like all the other cowardly **** pieces of **** who crow about the sanctity Second Amendment, but are only willing to bear arms to protect their own fat asses and nobody else's, even if we, as a society pay them their livelihood to do exactly that. This may have been the only prosecution in the United States of any police officer for failure to stop a crime in progress.
The officer was 60 years old, only had a service revolver, and was facing a kid armed with an AR-15 who was inside of a school firing at children.
He without question was a coward.
But do we demand a man a man be brave or else go to prison for life?
The far more important issue here is who taught that kid to shoot, and is that person for hire.
