There was a girl, fresh yet inside my gray head, as interested in current events as I was, back then.

Her boyfriend was my friend and my girlfriend was her friend, and I’d sit out in the lobby of the dorm and listen to her diatribes against Muslims and Iran and how we should turn the entire place into molten glass.

She was also interested in my hillbilly background and it wasn’t long until I taught her to dance to appropriate songs, played on the record player.

It came out of a clear blue sky.

They took our people.  They paraded them in front of cameras.  And of us alive then, politically aware young women seemed to be by far, the angriest.

She had freckles on her cheeks and greenish blue eyes, and could speak French and Spanish.

My mother came to visit one weekend and she sat out in the lobby shining up to her and having Mama play her guitar.

Mama also agreed with her about those damned Iranians, said they were like those Japs that tortured our boys during the Bataan Death March.

I’ve never been so tempted.

And JD Souther did not help any, playing her favorite dance tune on the radio.

I’m  a Christian. But my kind of Christian never seeks to save your soul for Jesus.  I don’t care at all the Jews think Christ was a false prophet.

But to want somebody so much you can barely stand it, is a feeling that can’t be helped, you know?

 She knew I was going to be married over the summer of 1982, and she came to my dorm room one last time, in May.

I was studying for a final, with a buddy of mine. 

My buddy started beating on me, after I told her I was busy, and she walked off alone.

Israel absolutely intended to kill them. What they did not intend was that there would be survivors to tell the story. That required a huge cover up operation.

Understand I was only 9 years old in 1967 but I was probably a deacon already and I could read on a college level.  I remember it.  We discussed it at home and in church.

Every Cambellite mother thinks her son will grow up to carry the nuclear foot ball for the President, or at least they did back then.

It was entertaining as hell to read those papers and discuss events with the elders and other adults.

I wonder, how many of those type churches exist today, like ours was then?

They were extremely relived to find it wasn’t a Russian ship.

America probably was at DEFCON 3 or 4 then.
