Recent Hospice Fraud Case
Recently, the operations manager of a hospice and home health care company was sentenced to prison for his role in a $150 million fraud scheme.
The case involved the Merida Group, a chain of hospice and home health agencies with locations throughout Texas. The Department of Justice (DOJ) communicated that three employees participated in a conspiracy to falsely convince thousands of patients that they had less than six months to live in order to enroll them in hospice programs. The patients had long-term, incurable diseases, but were otherwise ineligible for the programs.
The DOJ press release specifies that “physicians were bribed with illegal kickbacks, under the pretense of medical directorships, to falsely certify unqualified patients for services” and that “employees were instructed to falsify medical records, making non-terminal patients appear to be terminally ill and declining.” The defendants were sentenced to 20 years, 15 years, and 27 months in prison, respectively. In addition, one defendant was ordered to pay $4.7 million in restitution.

Twenty years ago I had a former sister in law that owned a little pharmacy. She billed $400,000 of medications to the dead, or on made up prescriptions, and wound up doing six months in work release, where she worked as a pharmacist at a military base.
Amazingly, she never lost her pharmacy license.
She died last year of Covid 19, unvaccinated.
Her Facebook page had MAGA **** plastered all over it.

I do know the difference between homecare and hospice. I do a little homecare to supplement my retirement income. I've been doing it for the past 8 years since I turned 62. I only work a little bit each week, but I like a little fun and vacation money.
Hospice costs 4x the cost of homecare. One of the frauds was paying kickbacks to doctors to certify non terminal people as terminal, provide homecare, and then bill it as hospice.
Since most homecare agencies bill at a rate $25-$30 per hour in my area. Converting those clients to hospice would mean billing Medicare at a rate of $100-$120 per hour. You can see the level of fraud in this area of care.
My cousin's wife recently died, after about 25 years of disability. Two weeks before she died she was placed in hospice with 24/7 care with specialized hospice nurses.
My brother-in-law was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer after Thanksgiving of last year. He was placed in hospice beginning of December, and died December 11.
Doctors can tell whether you are going to die within a couple of weeks. It might be 1 week or 3 weeks, but if you are still alive in 18 months; then it is fraud.
