I'm still thinking the shell fossils found up in the mountains were part of an elaborate ruse executed by prehistoric pranksters. Busy pranksters; since the fossils are widespread and many miles further than those amusing crustaceans could travel by themselves. They must've got together with yeti and rocs...

The margin of error would refer to and reflect the fact that most of the original stations have been replaced by proxies, or worse, left in situ in spite of altered surroundings.Beekeeper » 05 Jul 2023, 4:35 pm » wrote: ↑ Because of the VERY large numbers of sites that are used in recording the "average temperature"- we are talking over 60,000- then the deviation is likely offset by errors of each station in a less meaningful way that you describe. Far less.
Large numbers that are used in generating averages are ALWAYS statistically less prone to any "deviation" that would cause any meaningful statistical error beyond 1/1000th of a degree or perhaps slightly more.

A measuring station that WAS in deep woods and is NOW in a metropolitanc center, for example, would affect the measure of that single station quite significantly. Enough repetitions of this data corruption over a century and a half would create a significant margin of error. If the general trend is all going in one direction - and it is: toward urbanization of the measuring centers, - the tendency for error is compounded, rather than offset, by the amount of the **** up data.
They have a good point about casual fridays, moms being the best, and puppies being lovely. They're just full of **** about their cult. Their point about urban heat islands is my point entirely. I’m a full blown atheist about the quasi religion of global warming
But the global warmers have a good pint about urban heat islands.
The simple fact is, if a plurality of measuring stations have been encroached upon by urban heat islands - and a plurality has, - then the margin of error is somewhere between **** and gesundheit.Bruce » 05 Jul 2023, 9:10 pm » wrote: ↑ More than half of the world’s population now lives in urban areas. While urbanization has accelerated economic development in many ways, it has also created a number of environmental problems. One such problem is the creation of the urban heat island effect, defined as the increase in temperature caused by the built environment. Scholars have long observed that local temperatures in cities are higher than those in surrounding rural areas due to differences in land cover, urban geometries, and heat released by human activity. When they contribute to extreme heat, urban heat islands are more than just uncomfortable; they can lead to lasting negative impacts on people and the economy.

Concrete and pavement and buildings are usually in fact hotter than sitting in the shade.
But the global warmers claim, with huge mounds of scientific data stretching back over a century that the average of ALL the data measuring stations is rising.
Which, it is. No use arguing against it.
But in the past, those same stations showed cooling.
And the variations are small.
Ever watch a dice table?
Sometimes the players have hot streaks and sometimes the dice are cold.
at some point, if urban heat islands become the rule and not the exception, doesn't their existence become moot?Cannonpointer » 05 Jul 2023, 9:21 pm » wrote: ↑ They have a good point about casual fridays, moms being the best, and puppies being lovely.
